SAMURAI WARRIOR – Armed Kabuki Hero in a Wild Straw Cloak – 豊原国周 Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900)

Description

A striking original ukiyo-e from Meiji-era Japan, portraying a powerful samurai character from the world of Kabuki.

The warrior appears beneath an enormous traditional hat, armed with a sword and dressed in a dramatic shaggy cloak. His sharp expression, layered costume, and dark atmospheric setting give the image an unmistakable sense of tension and strength.

The figure represents Hatakeyama Shigetada, a legendary warrior of medieval Japan, transformed here into a dramatic Kabuki hero.

Rather than a quiet portrait, this is an image built around presence — sword, costume, posture, and expression all working together to create the unmistakable visual language of the samurai.

Created by Toyohara Kunichika, one of the great masters of Meiji-period actor prints, this is an authentic antique Japanese ukiyo-e, not a modern reproduction.

Its muted green, brown, purple, and red palette works especially well in contemporary interiors, Japandi spaces, vintage rooms, and darker minimalist interiors.
