Overview

This captivating antique Japanese ceramic vase is modeled in the form of a mari, the traditional Japanese hand ball, or kemari, the ancient court football. A beloved auspicious motif in Japanese decorative arts, the mari form appears frequently in Meiji-era Kyo-yaki and Kutani wares as an expression of playful elegance and good fortune. The five radiating polychrome enamel panels in white, red, yellow, green, and deep blue create a dynamic pinwheel effect when viewed from above, making this piece as visually striking as it is historically resonant. Estimated production period: Meiji to Taisho era, approximately 1890s to 1920s.
