Tsukioka Yoshitoshi – Female Warrior | Japanese Woodblock Print, 1885
She put on samurai armor and entered the battlefield to save her husband.
In 1600, the same year as the Battle of Sekigahara, Anotsu Castle came under attack by a large Western Army force.
According to the story, the wife of samurai lord Tomita Nobutaka put on armor, took up a naginata, and entered the battlefield to help save her husband.
Nearly 300 years later, the legendary Japanese ukiyo-e artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi depicted this remarkable story in woodblock print.

ABOUT YOSHITOSHI
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was one of the great Japanese ukiyo-e artists of the late 19th century.
A student of the celebrated Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he became particularly renowned for his dramatic warrior and historical prints.
Working during the transition from the age of the samurai into modern Japan, Yoshitoshi is often regarded as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e.

西軍の大軍に攻められた安濃津城で、
武将・富田信高の妻は甲冑を身につけ、薙刀を手に戦ったと伝えられています。

ABOUT YOSHITOSHI
月岡芳年（1839–1892）は、
幕末から明治にかけて活躍した日本を代表する浮世絵師。
歌川国芳に師事し、武者絵や歴史画を数多く残しました。
侍の時代が終わり、伝統的な浮世絵文化も衰退していく時代に活躍したことから、
現在では「最後の浮世絵師」の一人として世界的に知られています。
