LEGENDARY SAMURAI HERO – Ushiwakamaru in Kabuki | 春梅斎北英 Shunbaisai Hokuei (Birth Unknown–1837)

Description

A young warrior who would become a legend.

This authentic Edo-period ukiyo-e depicts Ushiwakamaru, the legendary childhood name of Minamoto no Yoshitsune — one of the most celebrated warriors in Japanese history.

The figure is performed by Kabuki actor Iwai Shijaku in “Ushiwakamaru from Five Transformations” (五変化ノ内 牛若丸).

Richly layered kimono patterns, a folding fan, sword, and the powerful pose of the actor create an image filled with movement, elegance, and determination.

Unlike modern reproductions, this is an authentic ukiyo-e from the Edo period — a surviving piece of Japanese visual culture created more than a century ago.

A striking work for interiors, especially for those drawn to samurai, Kabuki, traditional craftsmanship, and art with a powerful human presence.
