Tsukioka Yoshitoshi – Taira no Tomomori, 1885 | Original Japanese Woodblock Print
Before his death, the samurai picked up a broom.
Created in 1885 by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), one of the great masters of Japanese ukiyo-e, this original woodblock print depicts Taira no Tomomori during the final days of the Heike clan.
The scene comes from one of the most famous episodes in Japanese samurai history.
In 1185, at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, the Heike faced their final defeat against the Genji.
Realizing that the battle was lost, Tomomori did not flee.
According to The Tale of the Heike, he calmly prepared for the end. Before his death, he is remembered for taking a broom and cleaning the ship — an extraordinary image of composure, dignity, and acceptance in the face of death.
Rather than depicting the violence of battle, Yoshitoshi chose this quiet moment.
A warrior in full armor, sweeping the floor before meeting his fate.
It is an image that captures something deeply rooted in the traditional Japanese ideal of the samurai: dignity even in defeat.
ABOUT TSUKIOKA YOSHITOSHI
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was one of the most important Japanese print artists of the late 19th century.
A student of the celebrated ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi became renowned for his dramatic historical scenes, warriors, supernatural subjects, and psychologically powerful portraits.
Working during the transition from the Edo period into modern Japan, he witnessed the decline of traditional ukiyo-e as photography and Western printing technologies entered the country.
For this reason, Yoshitoshi is often described as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e.
This work was produced in 1885, only seven years before his death.

A SURVIVOR FROM 19TH-CENTURY JAPAN
This is not a modern poster or digital reproduction.
The work is printed on traditional Japanese paper using the woodblock printing process. Pigments can be seen through the reverse of the thin paper, consistent with the characteristics of traditional Japanese woodblock printing.
The colors remain remarkably vivid for a work of this age, particularly the reds, yellows, purples and dark tones of Tomomori’s armor and surroundings.
More than 140 years after it was produced, the print still retains a striking visual presence.
For collectors of Japanese art, samurai history and ukiyo-e, it represents a tangible connection to Meiji-period Japan.

月岡芳年「新中納言平知盛」1885年｜日本の木版画・浮世絵
死を前にして、その武士は箒を手に取った。
日本を代表する浮世絵師の一人、月岡芳年（1839–1892）が1885年（明治18年）に制作した木版画です。
描かれているのは、平家最後の武将の一人として知られる平知盛。
舞台となるのは、日本の武士の歴史において最も有名な場面のひとつです。
1185年、壇ノ浦の戦いで平家は源氏を相手に最後の戦いを迎えます。
敗北を悟った知盛は、逃げることを選びませんでした。
『平家物語』では、最期を迎えるにあたり、知盛が静かに身辺を整えた姿が語られています。なかでも、箒を手に船上を掃き清める姿は、死を目前にした武士の冷静さ、威厳、そして運命を受け入れる覚悟を象徴する場面として知られています。
芳年が選んだのは、激しい戦闘の瞬間ではありません。
完全な甲冑を身につけた武士が、最期を迎える前に静かに床を掃く姿。
敗北の中にあっても自らの尊厳を失わないという、日本の武士文化を象徴するような一枚です。
月岡芳年について
月岡芳年は、19世紀後半を代表する日本の浮世絵師です。
浮世絵の巨匠・歌川国芳に師事し、武者絵、歴史画、怪奇画、美人画など、数多くの作品を残しました。
芳年が活躍したのは、江戸時代から近代日本へと大きく社会が変化していった時代です。
写真や西洋式の印刷技術が日本に入り、伝統的な浮世絵文化が次第に衰退していくなかで制作を続けたことから、芳年はしばしば「最後の浮世絵師」の一人として語られています。
本作品が制作された1885年は、芳年が亡くなるわずか7年前。
江戸から明治へと続いた浮世絵文化の最終期に生まれた作品です。
