Description

A beautifully executed woodblock print after Keisai Eisen's Bijin Tōkaidō, a celebrated series combining two enduring subjects of ukiyo-e: elegant women and the famous stations of the Tōkaidō highway. Eisen's Bijin Tōkaidō is documented in museum collections as an ōban nishiki-e series dating to around the early 1840s.

This design represents Shinagawa, the first major post station encountered after leaving Edo on the Tōkaidō. In the foreground, an elegantly dressed woman kneels beside a brazier, delicately tending a small iron kettle. Her elaborate coiffure, layered kimono and richly patterned textiles contrast beautifully with the expansive coastal landscape behind her.

Across the water, sailing vessels and small boats evoke Shinagawa's historic connection with Edo Bay, while a procession of travelers and roadside buildings brings the famous highway to life. The composition is particularly appealing because Eisen does not simply portray a beautiful woman: he brings together fashion, tea culture, travel and landscape in a single image of nineteenth-century Japan.

The combination of deep indigo, muted green, warm red and the open blue of the bay gives the work a decorative quality that remains remarkably suited to contemporary Japanese and Japandi interiors.

Artist

Keisai Eisen (1791–1848) was a leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, particularly celebrated for his bijin-ga—images of fashionable and beautiful women. He worked under several art names and developed a distinctive style noted for sophisticated, sometimes sensuous female figures and elaborate contemporary fashions.

Alongside his celebrated images of women, Eisen also produced landscape prints and famously participated in the early stages of the Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō. His Bijin Tōkaidō is especially interesting for combining his mastery of female portraiture with views associated with Japan's most famous highway.

作品解説

江戸後期を代表する浮世絵師、溪斎英泉の代表的なシリーズのひとつ『美人東海道』をもとに制作された木版画です。

『美人東海道』は、東海道の宿場風景と美しい女性という、浮世絵を代表する二つの題材を組み合わせたシリーズ。美術館所蔵資料からも、1840年代前半を中心に制作された大判錦絵のシリーズであることが確認できます。

本図の舞台は、江戸を出発して最初の主要な宿場となる品川。

画面手前には、火鉢にかけられた小さな鉄瓶を扱う美しい女性が描かれています。華やかな髪飾り、幾重にも重なる着物、細部まで施された文様。その背後には一転して、広々とした海と山並みが広がります。

海には帆船や小舟が浮かび、海岸沿いには旅人や建物が連なる。

単なる美人画ではなく、「美人」「茶」「旅」「東海道」「江戸の風景」という日本文化の要素が一枚に凝縮されているのが、この作品の面白さです。

深い藍色の着物、落ち着いた緑、赤の差し色、そして品川の海の青。色彩のバランスも美しく、現代の和モダンやJAPANDIの空間にも自然に馴染む一枚です。

作者

**溪斎英泉（1791–1848）**は、江戸時代後期を代表する浮世絵師です。
