A dramatic scene from Meiji-era Japan, depicting a samurai standing over the fallen Kesa Gozen.
This original woodblock print is by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847–1915), one of the most important artists of the Meiji period, known for capturing Japan at the moment it was transforming from the world of the samurai into a modern nation.
The work belongs to the historical series Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi (教導立志基), which portrayed famous figures and stories from Japanese history as examples of courage, loyalty, and moral character.
The sword, traditional clothing, expressive figures, and deep decorative border make this a particularly striking piece even for those who are not traditional ukiyo-e collectors.
More than 100 years old, it is a surviving piece of Japanese visual history — created during the extraordinary transition between old Japan and the modern era.
