Overview

This remarkable Japanese lacquer incense box (kogo) from the 19th century represents the pinnacle of Edo-Meiji period craftsmanship. A masterpiece of decorative arts, it combines multiple advanced lacquer techniques to create a object of profound aesthetic refinement—precisely the type of connoisseur-quality piece valued in traditional tea ceremony practice.

Item Details

The kogo features a classic compressed spherical form with gracefully domed lid. The primary decoration showcases scattered maple leaves in an autumn-themed composition, each leaf rendered through the sophisticated integration of three distinct techniques: maki-e (gold lacquer painting), raden (white mother-of-pearl inlay), and polychrome accents in gold, orange, brown, blue-green, and pure white. The mother-of-pearl inlays, believed to be white-lipped pearl shell (Pinctada fucata), have been carefully cut to leaf shapes and set flush with the surrounding lacquer, their iridescent optical properties still evident. The interior surfaces display refined nashiji (pear-skin) gold dust lacquer finish, while a restrained red lacquer line marks the lid-to-body junction. The wooden base shows evidence of lathe-turning with a modest footring.

Condition

This piece exhibits gentle patina consistent with historical use within a cultured Japanese household. Minor surface wear and age-related marks do not diminish the overall structural integrity or visual impact. The lacquer remains stable, inlays are secure, and the lid closes properly. Overall condition is very good for an object of this age and significance.
