The mother-of-pearl inlays, believed to be white-lipped pearl shell (Pinctada fucata), have been carefully cut to leaf shapes and set flush with the surrounding lacquer, their iridescent optical properties still evident. The interior surfaces display refined nashiji (pear-skin) gold dust lacquer finish, while a restrained red lacquer line marks the lid-to-body junction. The wooden base shows evidence of lathe-turning with a modest footring.
