THE GIANT OUTLAW – Midnight Ambush in Old Japan – 歌川芳虎 Utagawa Yoshitora (active c. 1850–1880)

Description

A night raid erupts into chaos.

At the center stands the legendary outlaw Kumasaka Chōhan — enormous, heavily armed, and gripping a long weapon as men clash and fall around him.

This dramatic scene comes from “The Night Attack of Kumasaka at Akasaka Station in Mino Province,” created in 1860 during the final years of the Edo period.

According to Japanese legend, Kumasaka Chōhan was a notorious bandit leader who launched a nighttime attack on a travelling party, only to encounter the young warrior who would later become the legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune.

Rather than a simple warrior portrait, the entire composition feels like a moment frozen in the middle of an action film — bodies, weapons, fear, movement, and the commanding figure of the giant outlaw dominating the scene.

Created by Utagawa Yoshitora, a pupil of the celebrated ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi, this is an authentic antique Japanese ukiyo-e from the Edo period, not a modern reproduction.

This sheet was originally part of a three-panel triptych.

The deep blacks, muted blue, brown, and gold tones make it especially striking in contemporary interiors, vintage spaces, Japandi rooms, or darker minimalist settings.
