SAMURAI WARFARE – Horseback Warrior in the Battle of Kawanakajima – 歌川国芳 Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861)

Description

A powerful original Edo-period ukiyo-e depicting a samurai warrior on horseback in the chaos of battle.

Armor, swords, fallen warriors, and the dark horse dominating the composition create an intense image of feudal Japan at war. The dramatic movement and dense battlefield detail are characteristic of the warrior prints that made Utagawa Kuniyoshi one of the most celebrated ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century.

The subject is connected to the famous Battles of Kawanakajima, one of the legendary conflicts of Japan’s samurai era.

This is an authentic Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock print, not a modern reproduction.

Its dark palette, powerful composition, and unmistakable samurai imagery also make it a striking piece for contemporary interiors, especially Japanese, Japandi, vintage, or minimal spaces.
