This original woodblock print is by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847–1915), one of the leading artists of the Meiji period.

The warrior depicted is Minamoto no Yoshiie, one of the most celebrated samurai commanders in Japanese history. Known for both military skill and leadership, his legend survived for centuries as an ideal of the Japanese warrior.

The work belongs to the historical series Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi (教導立志基), depicting figures from Japanese history whose lives represented courage, discipline, and character.
