This dramatic reproduction woodblock print is based on “Moon Through the Smoke” (Enchū no Tsuki / 烟中月), from Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s celebrated series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki Hyakushi / 月百姿).
The scene depicts a traditional Japanese firefighter confronting a massive fire.
During the Edo period, fires were one of the greatest dangers of urban life, and firefighters became admired symbols of courage, toughness, and loyalty.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was one of the most important artists of the final generation of ukiyo-e.
A pupil of the celebrated Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi became famous for dramatic historical scenes, warriors, supernatural subjects, beautiful women, and psychologically powerful compositions.
His late masterpiece, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, combines Japanese and Chinese history, literature, legend, and everyday life through the recurring presence of the moon.
Today, the series is regarded as one of the defining achievements of Yoshitoshi’s career.
