This extraordinary two-sheet ukiyo-e depicts Ibaraki-dōji, the legendary demon of Japanese folklore, appearing in disguise before the warrior Watanabe no Tsuna.
At first glance, the wild white hair, animal-like features and supernatural presence evoke the terrifying world of bakeneko, yōkai and Japanese ghost stories.
But this is the story of Ibaraki-dōji — a powerful oni said to have returned in disguise to recover the arm that Tsuna had once severed.
The raised sword, flowing white hair, theatrical costumes and dark gray background create an exceptionally dramatic composition.
Unlike many decorative ukiyo-e scenes, this work feels almost cinematic:
a single frozen moment just before violence, revelation and supernatural chaos.
Created in 1883 during the Meiji period, this is an authentic antique ukiyo-e diptych — not a modern reproduction.
Displayed together, the two original sheets form a powerful large-scale image with remarkable presence on the wall.

描かれているのは、日本の伝説に登場する鬼「茨木童子」。
獣のような姿、長く流れる白髪、異様な存在感は、化け猫や妖怪を思わせる強烈なビジュアルを持っています。
しかし本作の物語は、渡辺綱と茨木童子。
かつて渡辺綱に腕を斬り落とされた茨木童子が、綱の母に化けて現れ、失った腕を取り戻そうとする有名な怪異譚を題材としています。
