An original Edo-period Japanese woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika, one of the great masters of nineteenth-century kabuki portraiture.
Published in 1867 (Keiō 3) as part of the series “Kotoba no Hana Hiraku Suehiro” (詞花開末広), this work depicts Kasane — a woman whose tragic story became one of the haunting legends of Japanese kabuki.
Kasane is associated with a famous tale of love, jealousy, betrayal, murder, and supernatural revenge. Her story developed into numerous kabuki and theatrical adaptations, making her a memorable female figure in traditional Japanese drama.
She is therefore more than simply a beautiful woman in a kimono. Kasane belongs to the darker side of old Japanese storytelling — a world where intense human emotions can survive even beyond death.
Kunichika captures that atmosphere beautifully.
Her head is lowered, her eyes half-closed, and one delicate hand is raised before her face. Long black hair falls heavily around her shoulders, creating a quiet but unsettling psychological tension.
Against the deep dark background, her elaborate kimono becomes particularly striking. Indigo, turquoise, rust red, floral and geometric patterns overlap across the composition, giving the print an unexpectedly modern graphic quality.
Above the figure is an open folding fan carrying calligraphy, while the red cartouche identifies the character as “Kasane” (かさね).
The print bears Kunichika’s signature “Kunichika hitsu” (国周筆) with the Toshidama seal. The publisher’s mark “Kagaya” (加ゝや) and the carver’s mark “Hori Ei” (彫栄) are also visible.
Archival records identify the publisher as Kagaya Kichiuemon and date the series to 1867.
More than 150 years later, the image still feels remarkably powerful.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo and Meiji periods, particularly celebrated for his powerful portraits of kabuki actors.
A pupil of Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), Kunichika developed a distinctive style characterized by dramatic compositions, expressive faces, strong areas of color and elaborate textile patterns.
His career bridged the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate and the rapid modernization of Meiji Japan.

幕末を代表する役者絵師、豊原国周による江戸時代の木版画です。
本作は慶応3年（1867）に刊行された『詞花開末広（ことばのはな ひらく すえひろ）』の一図。
描かれているのは、日本の歌舞伎における悲劇的な女性として知られる「かさね」です。
かさねは、愛、嫉妬、裏切り、殺人、そして死後の怨念をめぐる物語と結びついた人物です。その物語はさまざまな歌舞伎や芝居へと展開し、日本の怪談的な演目を象徴する女性像のひとつとなりました。
つまり本作に描かれているのは、単なる「着物姿の美しい女性」ではありません。
強い感情が死を越えて残り続ける――そんな日本の古い物語が持つ、妖しく暗い世界を背負った女性です。
国周はその空気を、非常に印象的な構図で描いています。
顔を伏せるように傾け、細い指を顔の前へ差し出すかさね。長い黒髪が肩へ流れ、半ば閉じた目とわずかに開いた口元からは、静かながら不穏な感情が感じられます。
深い黒を背景に、藍、緑、朱色を重ねた着物の文様が鮮烈に浮かび上がります。
花や幾何学文様を組み合わせた衣装は装飾性が高く、150年以上前の作品でありながら、現代のファッションやグラフィックデザインにも通じる強さがあります。
上部には書を配した大きな扇。そして赤い短冊には、人物名である「かさね」。
左上には「国周筆」の落款と年玉印、その横には版元を示す「加ゝや」、さらに「彫栄」の文字も確認できます。
資料上では版元は加賀屋吉右衛門、彫師は彫栄、刊行は1867年とされています。
150年以上の時を経ても、人物の表情、黒い背景、着物の大胆な色彩には独特の存在感があります。
