A commanding female figure from one of Japan’s great theatrical classics.

This ōban woodblock print depicts Kakujū, an important character in Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami (Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy), a celebrated drama based on the downfall and exile of the historical scholar and statesman Sugawara no Michizane. In the play, Kakujū is the aunt of Kan Shōjō—the fictionalized Michizane—and the mother of Kariya-hime. She is remembered as a formidable matriarch: severe and perceptive, yet deeply devoted to her family.

Kunisada captures that strength in a remarkably restrained composition. Kakujū stands alone in an interior, her body enveloped in an elaborate russet-brown robe patterned with delicate blue blossoms. Beneath it, sweeping layers of black and white create a dramatic vertical rhythm. At her side she carries a sheathed blade, while her composed expression and deliberate posture give the figure an unmistakable authority.

Behind her, a standing lantern and flowering plum branches frame the scene against a pale blue sky. The plum is especially resonant within the world of Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami, whose story is closely associated with Michizane and the celebrated legends surrounding him.

The vertical cartouche at upper left identifies the character as “Goshitsu Kakujū” (後室覚寿). At lower left is the Toyokuni ga (豊国画) signature, the name under which Kunisada worked in his later career, together with the carver’s mark Hori Take (彫竹).

Rather than presenting feminine beauty in the conventional manner of bijin-ga, this print centers on presence, dignity, and character—a powerful portrait of one of classical Japanese theatre’s strong female roles.

Artist

Utagawa Kunisada I (1786–1865), later known as Toyokuni III, was a pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I and one of the dominant ukiyo-e artists of nineteenth-century Japan. He was especially renowned for yakusha-e, portraits of kabuki actors and theatrical characters, as well as bijin-ga and literary subjects.

His work is distinguished by confident figure drawing, sophisticated textile patterns, strong color contrasts, and an exceptional ability to translate the visual drama of the kabuki stage into woodblock print.

日本を代表する古典演劇に登場する、強い意志を持った女性を描いた一図です。

本作に描かれているのは、『菅原伝授手習鑑』の重要人物覚寿（かくじゅ）。同作は、歴史上の学者・政治家である菅原道真の失脚と大宰府への左遷を下敷きにした、歌舞伎・人形浄瑠璃の名作です。

覚寿は、劇中の菅原道真にあたる菅丞相の伯母であり、苅屋姫の実母。物事を見抜く鋭さと厳格さを持つ一方、家族への深い情も併せ持った、非常に存在感の強い女性として描かれています。

国貞は、その強さを比較的抑制された構図で表現しています。

覚寿が身にまとうのは、茶褐色を基調に繊細な青い花文様を散らした豪華な衣装。その下から大きく流れる黒と白の衣が、縦方向への強い動きを生み出しています。

腰元には鞘に収められた刀。落ち着いた表情と隙のない立ち姿からは、この人物が持つ威厳が伝わってきます。

背景には灯籠と白い梅の花。

『菅原伝授手習鑑』の世界において、梅は菅原道真をめぐる伝説とも深く結びついたモチーフであり、淡い青空を背景に咲く梅が、室内の人物像に静かな緊張感を加えています。

画面左上の短冊には、人物名である**「後室 覚寿」**。

左下には、国貞が晩年に用いた**「豊国画」の署名と、彫師を示す「彫竹」**の文字が確認できます。

一般的な美人画のように女性の華やかな美しさを前面に出すのではなく、本作の魅力は人物の強さ、威厳、そして存在感にあります。
