This traditional Japanese woodblock reproduction is based on “Three Women in the Rain,” one of the elegant designs from Torii Kiyonaga’s celebrated series Current Manners in Eastern Brocade (Fūzoku Azuma no Nishiki), originally created around 1783.
There is no famous battle or grand monument here.
Instead, Kiyonaga captures something more intimate: three women walking together through the rain in Edo — present-day Tokyo.
Long diagonal lines of rain fall across the composition while traditional Japanese umbrellas open above the women. Their layered kimono bring together deep indigo, black, red, green, and pale blue, creating an intricate balance of color and pattern.
Kiyonaga was renowned for depicting tall, graceful women with a natural sense of movement. Here, their slightly exposed feet, flowing robes, and overlapping umbrellas give the scene the feeling of a moment caught in motion.
Nearly 250 years later, the image still feels remarkably modern.
The restrained background, graphic lines, and sophisticated color palette make it especially striking in Japandi, minimalist, modern, and contemporary interiors.

鳥居清長 Torii Kiyonaga (1752–1815)
Torii Kiyonaga was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period’s 18th-century print culture and is particularly celebrated for his elegant depictions of women.
His tall, graceful figures, refined compositions, and sophisticated use of color helped define the ideal of beauty in ukiyo-e during the 1780s.

画面を斜めに走る無数の雨。
その上に大きく広がる、日本の伝統的な和傘。
藍、黒、赤、緑、淡い青が重なる三人の着物には、それぞれ異なる文様が描かれ、非常に洗練された色と柄のリズムを生み出しています。
鳥居清長は、すらりとした長身の女性と、自然な身体の動きを描くことで知られた浮世絵師です。
裾からわずかに見える足元、雨の中で揺れる着物、重なり合う傘。
まるで雨の日の一瞬を切り取ったような動きがあります。
約250年前の作品でありながら、その構図には驚くほど現代的な美しさがあります。
