This reproduction woodblock print is based on “Received Back into the Moon Palace — The Bamboo Cutter” (月宮迎 竹とり), from 月岡芳年 Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s celebrated series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (月百姿).
The scene comes from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, one of Japan’s oldest and most beloved legends.
The story follows Kaguya-hime, a mysterious girl discovered as a tiny child inside a glowing bamboo stalk. Raised by an elderly bamboo cutter and his wife, she grows into a woman of extraordinary beauty.
But Kaguya-hime does not belong to this world.
She is a princess of the Moon.
In this scene, Yoshitoshi depicts the story’s haunting final chapter, as the celestial princess prepares to leave her earthly home and return to the Moon.
Her pale white robes, long black hair, and vivid red sash emerge from behind the dark architecture, creating an image that feels almost supernatural.
Rather than showing the moment with spectacle, Yoshitoshi creates a quiet and mysterious atmosphere — a farewell between two worlds.
It is a story of beauty, separation, destiny, and the sadness of knowing that some things cannot remain forever.
The restrained palette of gray, white, black, pale blue, and red also gives the composition a remarkably modern quality.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was one of the most important artists of the final generation of ukiyo-e.
A pupil of the celebrated Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi became known for dramatic historical scenes, warriors, supernatural subjects, beautiful women, and psychologically powerful compositions.
His late masterpiece, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, was originally published between 1885 and 1892 and brings together Japanese and Chinese history, literature, legend, and everyday life through the recurring presence of the moon.
The original design of this work was published in 1888.

作品解説
地球を永遠に離れようとする、月から来た姫。
月岡芳年（1839–1892）の代表的連作『月百姿』に収められた「月宮迎 竹とり」をもとにした複製木版画です。
題材となっているのは、日本最古の物語の一つとして知られる『竹取物語』。
光る竹の中から小さな女の子として発見された、かぐや姫。
竹取の翁とその妻に育てられ、やがて類まれな美しさを持つ女性へと成長します。
しかし、かぐや姫はこの世界の人ではありませんでした。
彼女の故郷は、月。
芳年が描いたのは、かぐや姫が地上での暮らしに別れを告げ、月へ帰ろうとする物語のクライマックスです。
白い衣。
長く流れる黒髪。
鮮烈な赤い帯。
暗い建築の奥から姿を現すその姿には、どこか人間ではないような神秘性があります。
芳年はこの別れを派手な場面としてではなく、静かで幻想的な瞬間として描きました。

月岡芳年は、浮世絵最後期を代表する重要な絵師の一人です。
歌川国芳に学び、武者絵、歴史画、怪奇・妖怪、美人画など幅広い題材を手掛け、劇的な構図と強い物語性、心理描写によって独自の世界を築きました。
晩年の代表作『月百姿』は1885年から1892年にかけて刊行され、日本や中国の歴史、文学、伝説、人々の暮らしを「月」という共通のモチーフで描いた連作です。
本作品の原画は1888年に発表されました。
