Description
A striking original Japanese woodblock print by Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912), depicting the kabuki character Munekiyo, portrayed by the celebrated actor Nakamura Shikan.
The image is dominated by a powerful figure gripping the hilt of his sword, his sharp gaze emerging from behind a dramatic black garment. At its center is an oversized butterfly crest, creating a bold graphic composition that feels remarkably modern despite the work being created in Meiji-period Japan.
Deep black, muted green and warm ochre are contrasted with the richly patterned red garment beneath. Behind the figure, an old pine tree and theatrical scenery evoke the atmosphere of traditional kabuki.

Yōshū Chikanobu / 楊洲周延 (1838–1912) was one of the important Japanese woodblock print artists of the Meiji period.
Born Hashimoto Naoyoshi, Chikanobu originally belonged to the samurai class and served the Takada domain before pursuing a career as an artist. Working within the Utagawa tradition, he became known for kabuki actor portraits, historical scenes, contemporary subjects and elegant depictions of women.
His career bridged two radically different Japans: the disappearing world of the samurai and the rapidly modernizing Meiji era.

明治を代表する浮世絵師、楊洲周延（1838–1912）による真作木版画。歌舞伎役者・中村芝翫が演じる「宗清」を描いた作品です。
刀の柄を握りながら、鋭い視線を向ける男。
画面を大きく占める黒い衣装には、巨大な蝶の紋が大胆に描かれています。明治期の作品でありながら、現代のグラフィックデザインにも通じる非常に力強い構図です。
深い黒、落ち着いた緑、黄土色。その中から鮮やかな赤い衣装が覗き、背景には松と歌舞伎の舞台空間が広がります。
浮世絵について詳しくなくても、純粋に「日本のアート」として楽しめる一枚です。

楊洲周延（ようしゅう ちかのぶ／1838–1912）は、明治期を代表する浮世絵師の一人です。
本名は橋本直義。もともと武士の身分にあり、高田藩に仕えた後、浮世絵師として活動しました。歌舞伎役者絵、歴史画、時事的な作品、美人画など幅広い作品を残しています。
彼の生涯そのものが、「侍の時代」から近代日本へと移り変わる激動の時代をまたいでいます。
