Description

This original ukiyo-e actor print by Toyohara Kunichika depicts the celebrated Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō V in the role of Inaba Kōzō. Museum records identify Kunichika's Kabuki Actors (Onoe Kikugorō / Inaba Kōzō) as a work from 1869 (Meiji 2), originally conceived as part of an ōban-format triptych. Another impression bearing the same actor and role is preserved in the Ishikawa Prefectural Museum of Art.

Rather than relying on elaborate scenery, Kunichika isolates the actor against a deep, almost black interior. Kikugorō appears through the architectural frame of a doorway or partition, one hand gripping its edge as he leans forward. His dark indigo checked kimono, restrained salmon-colored sash, and sharply articulated face create a striking contrast against the shadowed background.

The result is remarkably theatrical: the surrounding darkness works almost like a stage spotlight, concentrating attention on the actor's expression and posture. The vertical cartouche identifies Inaba Kōzō and Onoe Kikugorō, while Kunichika's signature appears at lower left. The cropped, architectural composition gives the print an unusually modern graphic quality while retaining the immediacy of nineteenth-century Kabuki.

Artist

Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900) was one of the foremost artists of yakusha-e, or Kabuki actor prints, during the transition from the Edo period into Meiji Japan. He entered the studio of Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) as a teenager and became particularly celebrated for his powerful actor portraits, expressive faces, and sophisticated use of color.

Kunichika remained deeply connected to the Kabuki world and was known for observing actors and their expressions backstage. Today he is regarded as one of the defining ukiyo-e artists of the Meiji period, particularly for his vivid documentation of nineteenth-century Kabuki culture.

作品解説

幕末から明治を代表する役者絵師、豊原国周による歌舞伎役者絵です。描かれているのは、名優五代目尾上菊五郎が演じる稲葉幸蔵。

美術館資料には、国周による《役者絵（尾上菊五郎・稲葉幸蔵）》が1869年（明治2年）の作品として記録されており、本来は竪大判三枚続として構成された作品であることが確認できます。また、同じ「稲葉幸蔵・尾上菊五郎」の作品が石川県立美術館にも所蔵されています。

本作で特に印象的なのは、その大胆な「暗さ」です。

ほとんど黒に近い室内を背景に、障子あるいは建具のような枠から身を乗り出す菊五郎。深い藍色の格子柄の着物、淡い朱色の帯、そして白く浮かび上がる役者の顔が、暗い背景の中で強烈なコントラストを生み出しています。

舞台照明のように人物だけが闇から浮かび上がる構図で、視線や身体の傾きから、まさに芝居の一瞬を切り取ったような緊張感があります。

人物を囲む建築的なフレームも非常に大胆で、150年以上前の役者絵でありながら、現代のグラフィックデザインにも通じる鋭さを感じさせる一枚です。

作者

**豊原国周（1835–1900）**は、幕末から明治時代に活躍した浮世絵師で、特に歌舞伎役者を描いた「役者絵」の第一人者として知られています。

10代で**歌川国貞（三代豊国）**の門下に入り、その後、役者の表情や舞台上の存在感を大胆に捉える独自の画風を確立しました。歌舞伎の世界と深く関わり、役者たちの表情や仕草を舞台裏でも観察していたと伝えられています。

鮮烈な色彩と迫力ある人物表現によって、現在では明治浮世絵を代表する絵師の一人として高く評価されています。
