An original Edo-period Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, one of the most imaginative and internationally celebrated masters of ukiyo-e.
Created in 1852, this work is “Ashida” from Kuniyoshi’s famous series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō (木曽街道六十九次之内).
At first glance, it appears to be an elegant woman traveling through a snowy landscape.
Look closer, however, and the scene becomes much darker.
The woman is Nyogetsuni, a sorceress associated with the legendary Takiyasha. She walks through the snow while performing a magical ritual, while behind her an attendant carries a severed human head attached to a branch.
It is a striking example of Kuniyoshi’s fascination with the supernatural, warriors, legends, ghosts and strange stories of old Japan.
Takiyasha is one of the legendary female figures associated with Japanese supernatural folklore. She is traditionally connected with the fallen warrior Taira no Masakado and became famous in later stories as a woman possessing extraordinary magical powers.
Rather than simply depicting a beautiful woman, Kuniyoshi creates an unsettling contrast between beauty and horror: elegant clothing, falling snow, supernatural ritual, and the shocking presence of the severed head.
This combination gives the print an atmosphere that feels surprisingly cinematic even today.
A small landscape of Ashida appears in the upper cartouche, connecting the supernatural story to one of the stations along the historic Kisokaidō highway.
For collectors of ukiyo-e, but equally for those fascinated by samurai culture, Japanese folklore, yokai, supernatural stories, tattoo art, dark interiors, or unconventional Japanese design, this is a particularly memorable work.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was one of the great masters of nineteenth-century Japanese ukiyo-e.
He became particularly famous for dynamic warriors, legendary heroes, supernatural creatures, ghosts, monsters and highly imaginative compositions.
His dramatic visual language has made his work especially popular far beyond traditional ukiyo-e collecting, influencing modern illustration, manga, tattoo culture and contemporary Japanese visual culture.

This is an antique woodblock print dating from the Edo period.

19世紀浮世絵を代表する絵師の一人、歌川国芳による江戸時代の木版画です。
本作は1852年（嘉永5年）に制作された、国芳の代表的シリーズ『木曽街道六十九次之内』の「芦田」。
一見すると、雪景色の中を進む美しい女性を描いた作品に見えます。
しかし、よく見るとその世界は一変します。
描かれている女性は、滝夜叉の伝説と結びつく妖術使い「如月尼」。
雪の中を歩きながら妖術の儀式を行い、その背後では従者が「生首」を枝に結びつけて運んでいます。
武者、伝説、幽霊、妖術、怪異などを好んで描いた国芳らしい、非常に印象的な一枚です。
滝夜叉は、日本の怪異・伝説の世界を代表する女性像の一人。
平将門の伝説と結びつき、後世の物語では強力な妖術を操る女性として広く知られるようになりました。
国芳がここで描いているのは、単なる美人画ではありません。
美しい着物。
静かに降る雪。
妖術を行う女性。
そして、その後ろに運ばれる生首。
「美」と「恐怖」を同じ画面に共存させることで、現代の映画や漫画にも通じるような、不穏でドラマチックな世界を作り上げています。
上部の小さな窓には、中山道の宿場「芦田」の風景が描かれています。
