This original Edo-period ukiyo-e triptych depicts the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon being executed by boiling alive in a giant cauldron.
At the center of the composition, Goemon rises from the boiling pot while holding his young son above his head — one of the most famous and shocking images associated with his legend.
According to popular stories, Goemon was captured after attempting to assassinate the powerful warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi and was sentenced to death in Kyoto. Over time, his story became part history, part legend, and eventually one of Japan’s most enduring tales of rebellion, crime, courage, and tragedy.
The three-panel composition transforms the execution into a theatrical spectacle: flames rise beneath the enormous cauldron, smoke fills the scene, and surrounding figures react with fear and tension.
This is an authentic Edo-period ukiyo-e print, not a modern reproduction.
